Procrastination Theatre: February 12, 2012

I am consistently impressed that the Academy’s dumb-ass nominations have made like half of my “must-see movies before the Oscars” list defunct. Anyway.

Okay, like, look, you all know Tilda Swinton was amazing and the fact that she wasn’t nominated is again, like, how many years before the Academy’s stupidity just takes away all their credibility? I feel like we’re three years away max before they go the way of, like, the League of Nations. “Wait, guys, we totally don’t do shit and people laugh at us.” Anyway. 

I guess what I’m saying is that this movie exhausted me and I will just offer a couple of thoughts in list form:

1. A+ on being a movie that is interested in really thinking about motherhood and what if someone just isn’t into motherhood. Which I love because women have such complexity and don’t have to be reduced to their ovaries. And also because motherhood is really also this fascinating paradox of perfect succulent beauty and total fucking horror. The infant is basically a parasite. It’s fascinating.

2. I think this is maybe the only movie I’ve ever seen that actually manages to translate into film that very particular fragmented consciousness/narrative that every modern book does. You know? Every book does this now, flits between memories and impressions and random streams of consciousness. But this film actually did it in film.
